Awakenings is a 1990 American drama film based on Oliver Sack’s 1973 memoir. It tells the story of neurologist Dr. Malcolm Sayer (played by Robin Williams) who discovers the beneficial effect of the drug L-DOPA in 1969. He administers it to catatonic patients who survived the 1919-1930 epidemic of encephalitis lethargica. Robert DeNiro plays one of the patients who is awakened after decades and must deal with a new life in a new time.
Dinner, various salads, and dessert will be served at 6:00 PM, followed by viewing of the movie. There will be a discussion at the conclusion of the movie.
