Mixing It Up At Christmas

“Truly wondrous is the whole chronicle of the incarnation. From the time Christ came, the ancient slavery is ended, the devil is confounded, demons take to flight, the power of death is broken, paradise is unlocked, the curse is taken away, sin is removed from us, error driven out. Truth has been brought back. The speech of kindliness is diffused. A heavenly way of life has been implanted on the earth.”

A Christmas thought from Leo the Great

By day, Richie serves mission teams from the United States. He and his lovely wife also chase after their daughters. At night, when the day’s work is complete and his daughters are sleeping, Richie prints T shirts. Richie is a deeply committed Christian. He lives his faith as he wears his T shirts—boldly.

When I spent a week in Mexico City this summer, I admired Richie’s shirts and bought the one featured in the picture. The Spanish translates, “Defeating the Bad Guy”. Look closely and you’ll note crossed clubs and brass knuckles. Who does Richie have in mind?  He is thinking of our spiritual enemy, the devil. But I could easily add to the list of bad guys: my pride, my anger, my self-pity. Other enemies include violence, greed, apathy and injustice. Richie is reminding us that there’s a battle going on this Christmas.

I’m not quite certain who Leo the Great is. I like his words very much though. I find out about the battle when I hear of the pain that so many of us are living with this December. And maybe it feels like your seems like your battle is going as badly as the one Rhonda Rousey found herself in a few weeks ago—you’re getting knocked down and knocked out.

Christmas brings a message of strong hope. Jesus is the victor. Because he won, so do you and me.
