Retreats afford us the opportunity to learn something new, renew our relationship with God, and refresh our minds and souls. We offer several retreats throughout the year and hope you might join us at one or more.
Be sure to take part in our Renewal Weekend March 24/25, 2017. A Renewal Weekend is a retreat that comes to the church. The weekend provides many opportunities to go to deeper places in our faith with your brothers and sisters in Christ from Thompson Church.
We welcome Brother Joseph Wallace-Williams, a monk at Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, NY. On Saturday, March 25, Brother Joseph will lead a half-day prayer retreat on forgiveness:
Coldness of mind,
coldness of heart,
coldness of soul,
The decision is really yours.
In the book of Deuteronomy we hear: "Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life. . .Deuteronomy 30:19 -New Living Translation. In choosing not to forgive we are in effect choosing death. death of soul, death of heart, death of body, death of mind. Forgiveness is not simply an act that we do, or one decision that we make, rather it is a process a way of living. Come spend some time with Br. Joseph as we together grow deeper in our discipleship with The Living Christ!
Saturday, the retreat begins at 9:00 a.m. and concludes 1:00 p.m. Lunch is provided and coffee will be available at 8:45 a.m. The fee for the retreat is $10. You can register here, or by signing up on the Table of Well Wishing.
On Sunday morning, Brother Joseph preaches at both services; and on Sunday evening, we conclude our Renewal Weekend with a special Vespers Service at 5:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The Princeton Seminary Gospel Choir joins us for worship. Following worship, everyone is invited to Fellowship Hall for a Covered-Dish Dinner. Look for the signup sheet on the Table of Well Wishing.
Holy Cross prayer retreat
Thompson heads to Holy Cross Monastery twice a year, usually in May and November, for a four-day retreat. Come and join a group of friends from a number of churches for time away from the rush of daily life. This three-night, four-day, retreat affords the time to step away from the regular demands of our lives and to enjoy a place of rest and welcome. Located on a bluff on the western bank of the Hudson River in New York State, Holy Cross Monastery is a Benedictine place of prayer of the Episcopal Church. The monks graciously welcome all who come. The monastery is a lovely setting with comfortable private rooms and simple yet exquisite meals. We join the monks in their five offices of prayer throughout the day. In the evening, starting at 9:00 pm, we are invited to participate in the Greater Silence, a time for silence that continues until the Eucharist the next day.
The spring retreat will be held May 30 - June 2, 2017 this year. The theme is "In Constant Prayer", based on the book of the same title by Robert Benson (books will be distributed the first day). See our brochure for more information.
In the winter, the men head to the Poconos Mountains for a weekend of fellowship, sharing, and good eating. After the sessions, there is plenty of time to enjoy the local activities. The men had a wonderful weekend of enrichment, fellowship, fun, and food! Plan on joining us next year!
Sandy cove 2016
Some of the women of TMPC attended a women's weekend retreat at Sandy Cove Ministries in Maryland in October 2016.
The weekend's theme was Living, Loving and Overcoming! We attended sessions and workshops that addressed issues that are closest to a woman’s heart – examining the things that promote wholeness in herself, her relationships and her life calling. Speaker Michelle McKinney Hammond's message was “get yourself in spiritual order and your natural life will come together.”
The next retreat will be in fall 2017 -- please join us for what is always a fulfilling weekend!
